The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commenced a fresh reconciliation process aimed at resolving internal disputes and uniting aggrieved factions within the party.
The development was confirmed by the Tanimu Turaki (SAN)-led National Working Committee backed by PDP governors.
Turaki disclosed the development while addressing journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, saying party leaders from opposing sides had begun working toward resolving their differences.
He said, “I can confirm that leaders of both sides, as of today, are working towards solutions. So reconciliation is ongoing, and all hope is not lost.”
The senior lawyer added that discussions initiated between the factions had started producing positive outcomes.
Turaki said, “From last night, those who are benefiting from this crisis and who do not want reconciliation to work have been shut out. So from that time till this morning, both sides are making some progress.”
Turaki also urged party supporters to remain calm and avoid actions that could undermine the reconciliation efforts.
He warned that inflammatory statements or actions by loyalists could derail the ongoing peace process aimed at restoring unity within the opposition party.
In a related development, the crisis rocking the PDP worsened on Tuesday as governors elected on the party’s platform distanced themselves from the alleged consensus selection of a national chairman and national secretary by a faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The governors insisted that they would pursue legal redress and demand a review of the process ahead of the party’s national convention.
Senior PDP members aligned with the governors-backed National Working Committee (NWC) led by Tanimu Turaki (SAN) said they would explore all legal options to resolve the dispute.
