The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, has expressed concern over the increasing death rate from Lassa fever, revealing that 214 people have died from the disease across the country in 2026.
According to the agency’s latest situation report released on June 22, the Case Fatality Rate, CFR, has risen to 25 per cent, indicating that one out of every four confirmed cases has resulted in death.
The NCDC noted that although efforts to contain the outbreak are ongoing, the mortality rate remains higher than figures recorded during the same period in previous years.
The agency attributed the trend to factors including delayed presentation of patients at health facilities, poor health-seeking behaviour and challenges in the management of severe cases.
“Lassa fever has claimed 214 lives in Nigeria, with the Case Fatality Rate rising to 25 per cent,” the NCDC stated.
Health authorities have urged Nigerians to maintain proper hygiene practices, avoid contact with rodents and seek prompt medical attention whenever symptoms of the disease appear.
